Training towards Independence service for severely brain damaged people

The “Training to Independence” service is a social and local service for lightly brain damaged people that utilises socio-educative interventions aimed at improving individual independence, and socialisation to maintain a certain cultural level. All of these activities are in preparation for entering the workplace. Interventions are modular taking regularity, time and activities into consideration, and are carried out at our centres and in the area in which the patient lives. The service is a multi-purpose one and has a very social aim, several modules are organised for type of intervention and purposes. Behind every activity are individual and group educational projects aimed at creating socialisation, experimentation, activities related to self-image and at reinforcing residual abilities. The main features of this service are flexibility and the opportunity to shape the interventions around the individual’s needs. Interventions are carried out in rehab courses, especially in the area where the person lives and spends time considering his needs and his progressive improvements.

The methodology of the service includes:

  • individualised rehabilitative courses in the local area (socio-occupational workshops, protected laboratories, traineeships, etc.).
  • attendance at the centre, for periods suitable to the individualised path for developing personal autonomy (full-time, part-time)

The interventions of this service fit in three modules:

  • Training module (3 years max) during which activities needed to obtain the goals set in the individualised path are carried out;
  • Reinforcement module (2 years max) which is aimed at a progressive reduction of the intervention until the discharge;
  • Supervision module for those who have finished the course but need temporary support in order to face new everyday activities.
