Beneficiaries

We understand a severe brain injury as acquired brain damage of various kinds (brain trauma, brain anoxia, brain haemorrhage/ischemia, etc.) strong enough to induce a coma for no less than 24 hours. The consequences of a brain injury are sense and motor disablements, permanent cognitive and/or behavioural disablements that entail impairment. Congenital brain damage, perinatal outbreak and brain damage related to a degenerative-progressive process (dementia syndromes) do not fall within this ambit. The service is available for people aged between 18 and 65 with a severe, mild or light brain injury and who, after a trauma, have cognitive and/or behavioural difficulties so acute as to significantly interfere with their independent management of instrumental and basic daily activities. Patients whose clinical conditions require considerable medical assistance (e.g. patients with tracheostomy, PEG, vegetative states, those with low responsiveness, etc.) are excluded from this service. People older than 65 will be evaluated case by case and will have an individualised path if their clinical conditions show room for improvement.
